This is a 23 lesson reading unit using the fantasy genre that takes your students to a higher level of accountability using the Reader's Workshop format. This unit was written with fifth graders in mind, but is suitable for fourth through sixth graders. The focus of this unit of study is that students will be able to compare and contrast two or more characters by drawing on specific details in the text including how characters interact. Although the intended outcome of this unit is under the strand “Key Ideas and Details” in the Common Core, your students will be working on a story’s craft & structure, integrating their knowledge & ideas as well as reading at an independent level. Many writing standards are also included.
Students are given clear targets on writing about reading. Each skill is modeled, practiced and assessed. Detailed strategies are described to promote a wide range of reading abilities. All writing prompts, short excerpts, rubrics and detailed lesson plans are provided. The only things you will need are copies of fantasy novels and picture books for your students as well as a selected class read aloud. The lessons use "The Dragon Slayers' Academy New Kid at School as the class read aloud, but others could be substituted.
