Football Fanatics… Masters of Mathematics!
Fantasy Football within the classroom, or as an after-school club, is authentic, hands-on computing and mathematical problem-solving that is engaging, student-centered, and an awful lot of fun. It is an iconic, pop-cultural hobby that would be an innovative way to address a number of Common Core math standards while practicing mental math. This version is a shortened version, outlinig simply how to play a fantasy football "match." For details on running a complete season, please see my other guide in my store.
Football Fanatics is a week-to-week pursuit for students in grades 4-8 during an entire NFL season. Boys and girls of all levels and abilities will get something from it; from the most statistically savvy students to ones who struggle with mental math, they all come alive when crunching the numbers in a close weekly match-up. It can be hard to find ways for students to be self-motivated in math activities; fantasy football does just that.
Be sure your students turn their lineup in by Thursday afternoon! :-)
