Students will choose a fantasy book to read during or after your
fantasy study. Students will read and complete lit kit tasks in 1-4 weeks. The literacy kit can be assigned as an at-home project to get families learning together through literacy. The literacy kit could be implemented during readers workshop as a partner project to get students learning together through literacy.
Set-Up Is Easy!
Provide reference sheets for students and parents. These can be laminated for repeated use. Provide a copy of each part of the kit for students to complete. Provide a laminated set of Fantasy Quiz Cards for students to use. Place all materials in a bag (Ziploc or cloth). Assign a due date for students to return their literacy bags. Use the Fantasy Lit Kit Sign Out Sign In checklist to sign the literacy kit out to a student (they can choose or you can assign). Have students check their name off when they’ve returned a completed literacy kit.
Students can share what they learned on a designated share date, or in reading workshop groups, or in whole group at a convenient time. Student work can be displayed on a Literacy Learning Wall or stored in student Lit Kit/Reading Portfolios. Another fun way for students to share is to have a literacy fair once a month for students to share their learning You could even invite parents to join!
