This lesson can be done either in the middle of reading "Farewell to Manzanar" or at the end of the book. Students are asked to look at a photograph of the Japanese Internment camps taken by Ansel Adams. The entire class can be given the same photograph or the students can pick one they find interesting. Students are asked to find descriptive imagery in the book (there is one organizer for them to fill out for this) and to identify images in the photograph that appeal to the 5 senses (there is another organizer for this as well). After completing the two organizers, the students should write 4 diary entries from the point of view in the picture. This will be somewhat creative writing as well as incorporating details from discussion in class.
