Use this visually stunning package of chapter-by-chapter questions as you take your class through Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston’s compelling true story, Farewell to Manzanar. As we work to pull more non-fiction materials into our Common Core-aligned classrooms, this autobiographical account of life in a Japanese internment camp during WWII is an important title to include.
These modern-designed worksheets will pull your students into the Wakatsuki family’s story and inspire them to think deeply about the author’s themes.
This packet includes 10 pages of student handouts with detailed questions (plot points, inference, and personal connections) covering all 22 chapters of Farewell to Manzanar. A separate 11-page detailed answer key is also included, of course. (A total of 21 pages in PDF format.)
The graphics feature actual historic documents and images, along with photos of important visual references from the book. Helpful maps are also included on two of the worksheets. All of the handouts are designed to pull students into their reading assignments, while the questions will require them to dig deeply into the text and their own minds.
The PDF format can easily be printed by students and used as nightly homework/class discussion starters. In order to save my own copying costs, I email pages of the PDF of the Farewell to Manzanar study question packet to all of the students on my class email list.
Sheets can also serve as small-group or full-class discussion starters, short-answer quizzes, and/or differentiated enrichment. I like to mix-and-match the use of the worksheets to keep things fresh as we work through our unit on Farewell to Manzanar.
