I created this activity for the excerpt in Farewell to Manzanar in my Glencoe textbook. It works with any excerpt that includes the portion of text where the Wakatsuki family is preparing to leave Terminal Island up to their arrival and a brief description of the conditions they find when they arrive at Manzanar. It would also work as part of a whole-novel study.
This activity provides students with 3 assumptions/claims, 3 themes, and 3 questions about the text. They will "hunt" through the text to locate evidence to answer each assumption and question and to illustrate each theme.
I like to group students for this activity, but it also works as independent practice. It requires students to review the text and find supporting details to defend their answers.
