This nonfiction book is by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, who writes about her experience as a young girl who, with her family, is forced from her home and into an internment camp.
This unit includes everything from pre-reading activities to individual worksheets for guided reading and a final essay assignment. It is centered around the use of literature circles, which are a great way to incorporate many of the Common Core speaking and listening standards.
I used this unit with 8th graders who had done one literature circle as a class before. Unlike traditional literature circles, which have the students in ability-based groups reading different books, this unit has the entire class reading together the same book. It works well for students who are new to literature circles or who need a reminder about how they work.
