Are you looking for writing activities to use during a farm animal unit? The Farm Animals Writing Center contains 12 writing activities and other support materials.

Included in this package of materials are templates for:

- 2 book templates,
- 3 card templates,
- 1 diary template,
- 1 fact book template,
- 1 journal template,
- 2 letter templates,
- 10 list templates,
- 6 poem templates,
- 4 postcard templates,
- 1 poster template,
- 1 recipe template, and
- 3 different writing papers.

Also included in the package to provide the different writing options to students are 12 posters, 12 activity cards, and a writing tic-tac-toe board. A set of tiered writing checklist bookmarks and a variety of different word forms provide additional supports to students.

Writing Center Activities

There are twelve activities included in this package of materials. All activities are provided in colour and in black/white and have both primary and regular writing lines.

Write a Book

Two different book templates are included in this package of materials. Students can write a book about farm life or animals on the farm.

Make a Card

Students can use one of the three provided card templates to make a card for someone they know. On the back of the card is a place for students to print their name.

Keep a Diary

Another option for students in the farm animals writing center is to keep a diary. Each day, students can make a diary entry from the point of view of a farm animal or a farmer.

Write a Fact Book

Some students may want to record what they are learning about farm animals. In the fact book, students can record what they learn.

Keep a Journal

Another option for students is to keep a journal. Students can make entries about what they are learning in their journal. Students can write pictures or diagrams in the box and then write about their drawings on the lines.

Write a Letter

A draft and final copy template is provided for writing a letter. Students can compose first compose a draft copy and later write a final copy. Templates for both one and two page letters are included.

Make a List

There are ten list templates that students can use to make a list related to farm animals. In addition, a blank template is included for students to create their own list.

Compose a Poem

Six different acrostic poems for different animals allow students to write poems about their favourite animals. Students write words related to their chosen animals on the lines provided. They can then draw a picture of the animal in the space provided.

Write a Postcard

Another writing activity that students might choose is the postcard activity. Students can write and address their postcard to a friend or relative. A blank postcard is provided so students can draw their own picture if they would like.

Make a Poster

Students can make a poster to illustrate what they know about their favourite farm animal. Students use the questions provided on the poster to help them with their poster.

Write a Recipe

Another activity students may choose is to write a recipe. Students list their ingredients and the recipe directions on the provided template.

Write a Story

A variety of different writing papers are included for students to use to write a story. Students can use one or more of the papers in their stories.

Activity Choices

There are three different ways to show students the choices they have in the writing center. Hang the full page posters on a wall for students to reference or use the smaller cards on a bulletin board. A writing tic-tac-toe board is also included that students can refer to when choosing a writing activity. You can also decide if students need to complete designated writing activities.

Writing Checklist Bookmarks

There are five different choices of bookmarks included in this package of materials. Give each student the bookmark that matches his/her learning needs. Four of the bookmarks have question prompts. The last bookmark is blank for you to customize if needed.

Farm Animal Words

Farm animal words are provided in four different formats. The first format is useful to use on a word wall. Students can reference the word wall to help them with their spelling. The second format is individual word cards. Provide each student with a set of word cards to help them develop their farm animal sight vocabulary. The third format is a poster of related farm animal words. Finally, the last format is a set of bookmarks that students could include in their writing folders to use when completing the different writing projects.
