This unit, Farm Friends, relates to farms and the animals found on a farm. It is geared towards young learners, Kinder through Second Grade. Many CCSS are addressed with this informational unit and is full of balanced literacy activities and materials.

~The Funny Farm: This is a short, nonfiction text that discusses the strange animals that might be found on a farm, such as llamas and peacocks. This is intended to be used with a whole class presented with a projector, or printed and used with guided reading groups. It contains real photos of the animals that students might not know are sometimes found on farms. It's perfect to build their schema of farms and animals and to talk about text features.
~Photo Prompt Printables: I included black and white photo, writing papers of interesting and funny farm related objects. It will be perfect for your writing block in centers or small groups The photos are black and white for easy printing.
~Emergent Readers: There are two emergent readers included in this unit that have predictable text and are interactive. The titles of the books are On the Farm and My Farm Friends. These would be useful in guided reading groups or as homework. They are simple to make, just print, staple and cut.
~Animal Printables: When you are studying specific animals found on farms, these printables will be perfect for your students! There are 48 printables included that feature the following animals: cows, pigs, sheep, cats, dogs, donkeys, horses, hens, ducks and goats. There are tree maps, writing papers, labeling sheets and a fact book included in the printables.
~Mini-Photo Cards: I included cards with the word wall pictures to use in pocket charts and centers when completing writing and word work activities. The following centers use the photo cards also.
~Word Work Centers: There are four word work centers in this unit: ABC Order, Syllable Sorting, Zoo or Farm Matching, and Mothers and Their Young. Students will be practicing using different farm vocabulary and building their schema of farms, while working on word skills at the same time. Each center has all materials provided, including recording sheets.
~Animal Sound Cards: These index-sized cards have different animals on the cards and the words, "What does the (animal) say?" There is a picture of the animal with the sound they make. These are perfect for transition times and to get the students moving for a short time. You can ask the students what a certain animal says and they can make the sound and movement. What fun!
~Scarecrow and Barn Craftivities: Lastly, there are two craftivities included that are super simple and will look perfect on your bulletin boards. Use your students photos of their faces for the scarecrows and they will be even cuter!
