Welcome to my Farmyard Fractions Unit! Each objective is aligned with the Common Core of Academic Standards. Also, each question on the summative assessment correlates to a specific objective.
I believe it is important to actively engage students in the learning process and allow them to discover learning on their own, yet provide them the adequate guidance needed to explore math. Mathematical concepts cannot be simply achieved through discovery based learning alone, but through a combination of discovery and structured instruction/assignments.
Therefore, through a combination of hands-on learning activities, cooperative learning groups, online games, video learning, traditional worksheets, bell-ringer assignments and exit slips, I have designed this unit to reach all students’ differing learning styles. In addition, the online learning games provide an opportunity to differentiate instruction and meet students where they are in this day of technology.
Specifically, in my daily planning outline, you will find a myriad of resources, activities, and projects in which the students will actively participate. The resources will be tabbed according to the day they plan to be used. This is not a rigid plan, however. If time does not permit for a certain activity to be used, it can be used the following day.
Similarly, the worksheets that the students complete will be used for formative assessment rather than busy work or a “time-filler”. This will allow the students to reflect upon their own work and become life-long learners who are always looking for a chance to discover something new. I hope you do enjoy this Farmyard Fractions Unit.
