This lesson was designed for one of my classes that I call “Life Design”. I wanted to make a class that was built entirely around the concept that art is everywhere. This class not only promotes the relevancy of art and design in every part of our everyday world but it also promotes how important it is to learn the basics and build upon them to improve your artistic skills. Every lesson that I teach within this particular class is a vocation that students could use their artistic skills for a living. (Movie makeup, car design, illustration, fashion, tattoos, toys, video games, magazines, graphic design, theatre design, jewelry, comics/graphic novels, culinary arts, fantasy weapons, and murals)
This lesson goes along with my separate Fashion Design lesson papers. This powerpoint starts out by making fun of Lady Gaga and Nikki Minaj because of their fashion stupidity. I break down how to design/critique fashion by using some key terms and concepts: silhouette, line, visual weight, color, balance, texture, unity, and contrast. Each term has discussion bullets and example fashion. I talk at the end about styles and show the breakdowns of those styles in their use of color, lines, textures, and effects (futuristic, dramatic, classic, conservative, steampunk, ethnic, and cosplay)
The student project is to come up with a costume or fashion design for one of my mini female mannequins (purchased on Ebay for $22 a piece) I have the students work in small groups to conserve how many mannequins we need and that also cuts down on the wear and tear of them from year to year too. They are to use other time periods and styles to inspire their new creations. They also have to use some recycled unorthodox materials just to save some money in my budget and force them to think more creatively. I give loads of examples of recycled fashion at the end of the presentation. There is also another small class assignment at the very end where students will have to use the vocabulary from the lesson to explain and critique what the celebrity of their choice is wearing; good or bad.
