We all have those students that finish faster than the others... What do they do now? Silent reading is fine for some of the time, but here is a resource you can use with those students that will have them practicing other higher order thinking skills as well. Included are 11 different centers and activities you can have them work on. That's enough to pass out to a lot of your students and they can be rotated at different times so students will have a different activity each time. Most of the activities are open ended as well, so they can be used more than once!
Included are the following activities:
~Alternate Ends: Students choose from the famous character cards and write a story using three of them.
~Link Up 4: Students must choose a letter from each column on the card to make a word.
~Alike and Different: Students choose a card with a pair of items and tell how the items are alike and different using a Venn Diagram.
~ABC Categories: Students think of a word from each letter of the alphabet for a specified category.
~Compound Words: Students sort the word part cards to make compound words.
~What You'll Need: Students choose a card with a task and must list all the things they need to complete the task.
~What's the Question: Students choose an item card and write a question in which the card is the answer.
~Build a House: Students sort the word cards onto houses, making sure to have a pronoun, adjective, noun and verb. They unscramble the words to make a silly sentence.
~In Reverse: Students take the kid cards and put their names in REVERSE ABC Order.
~We Go Together: Students sort the cards into groups and tell how each item in the group is alike the others.
~BOGGLE: Students make words from the given letter cards.
Each of the centers has a recording sheet and student direction card, so students can work independently when finished with their main task.
