When we order fast food, why does it often look nothing like the photos on the wall?
This resource examines tactics the fast food industry use to entice customers, and make the food they offer look more appealing than it maybe is.
There are two video-based activities: 'Fast Food Commercials USA', and 'Behind the Scenes at a McDonald's Photo Shoot', both with vocabulary and comprehension activities.
The two reading-based activities ('Eleven Ways Advertisers Make Food Look Delicious', and 'Fast Food Fare isn't Picture Perfect') include comprehension checks, plus the opportunity for students to reflect upon and extend their thinking.
This has been tried and tested with my high-schoolers to great effect. Fast food is very much their world, for good or bad, and these activities provoked maximum engagement, connection, and fun - particularly the 'what you get' vs. 'what you see in the photo' activities!
