Fast Formative Assessment Strategies: Checking for Understanding

This packet of resources provides teachers with ideas for mini-assessments that could be used to close a lesson for grades 6-12. Assessing the learning at the end of each lesson is an important part of effective instructional design as it informs the teacher about what learning happened or didn’t happen and informs students of how confident they feel about what they have learned. These mini-assessments are designed to get students focused on showing what they have learned according to the learning objective for the lesson in clever and engaging ways.

The assessment tools in this packet can be used across all content areas and grades levels 6-12. The strategies can be used in class or taken home as an assignment. Some require just a few minutes and others are a bit longer.

As you review each strategy you will quickly see how each could be also be used as an engagement strategy or formative assessment in any lesson. Frequent use will help increase the engagement of all students in your lessons therefore increasingly their motivation for learning and the likelihood of increased academic achievement.
