Fast Pace Race: Articulation Challenge for S and Z is a game for students who are ready to move from drill and practice activities to generalizing their sound production of S and Z in conversation. Students race against the clock to produce their sound in words, phrases and short sentences in three different formats:
Warm-Up Tracks - The students say a series of single words as they follow a track from start to finish.
Qualifying Races - Students say a set of single words or phrases arranged in a column, racing to beat their own times. 3 levels of difficulty included.
Fast Pace Races: Students say a set of similar sentences, racing to beat their own times.
Students are encouraged to complete the challenges using the speed of conversational speech and earn rewards of increasing point value depending on their performance. The SLP times each race and awards the students with ribbons and trophies, monitoring speed and errors produced.
The goal of this activity is to correctly produce a series of words with targeted speech sounds in quick succession, simulating the rapid movements of conversational speech, NOT to produce them as fast as the student can.

Detailed instructions for use
How to play:
Students draw game cards to determine which type of race he/she will complete and selects a corresponding challenge card. The student completes the race 2 or 3 times, as designated on the reference cards. The SLP uses a stop watch to time the student and records each time on a slip of paper, in addition to keeping track of the number of errors produced. The SLP gives the student an award according the the performance. The game is completed once each student completes 5 race challenges. The students add up their award points; the student with the highest number of points wins.
This activity may also be used successfully with individuals. My students love to compare their point totals from one session to the next!
