This colorful and detailed PowerPoint and bundle explains the difference between faulting and folding, discusses the parts and types of faults, and looks at how faulting, folding and volcanic activity can build mountains. A second PowerPoint also includes a Texas version which discusses the Balcones Fault Line in Central Texas. You will get both PowerPoints for the price of one. Use the PowerPoint that best fits your situation.
Stress within the earth comes in three forms: compression, tension and shearing. Each type of stress can cause a different type of fault. But a fault only occurs if there is movement within the Earth. Compressional stress can cause a reverse fault. Tensional stress can cause a normal fault. And shearing stress can create a strike-slip fault. The pictures within this PowerPoint help to demonstrate the different types of faults. Also available is a worksheet that helps students practice this skill.
Folding is a process when rock layers are folded instead of faulted given specific conditions. Slow forces with more malleable rock layers at increased temperatures can promote folding over faulting.
There are three main mountain types: volcanic, folded and fault-block. Volcanic mountains are previewed in this bundle but are covered more thoroughly in the Volcanoes Bundle. Folded mountains are caused by the folding process and are the most common type of mountain on continents. The Rockies, Alps and Andes are examples of folded mountains. Fault-block mountains are produced by faulting when you have several faults in an area.
If you use the Texas version of this PowerPoint, it includes information about the Balcones Fault which is an inactive, normal fault line through central Texas.
