Fauvism is the art style chosen by a group of early 20th century artists based in Paris, France. They liked the name "Les Fauves" because it means "wild beasts". They saw themselves as the wild beasts of the art world due to their radical ideas. They emphasized bold, bright and even unnatural color. Portraits, for example, might have strong greens and purples in them instead of flesh tones. They also liked painterly quality in their works so the art was well painted but in startling colors. The Fauves especially believed in using strong, bold color to express their emotions in their art. Fauvism was a short movement, from only 1904–1908, but painters in that movement might have begun as early as 1900 while others pressed on with it past 1910. The movement had three exhibitions. Its leaders were André Derain and Henri Matisse. Matisse became the most well known and enduring artist from this group.
