Understanding the difference between feature and news writing can be tricky for some students. Feature article is not just a different name for a news story or student research report. Understanding this genre of writing is best achieved by comparing and contrasting it to these other genres.
This unit helps solidify a student’s understanding of the feature genre by first contrasting news and feature video reporting and then news/feature articles.
Formal instruction on the key characteristics of the feature genre is included and teachers wanting to take students deeper can continue with in-depth investigation into two common categories of feature writing: Informational Feature Articles & Human Interest Feature Stories.
Information to help students develop quality headlines and leads is also included along with a student checklist drafting directions and an assignment rubric.
