By 4th and 5th grade, most students have been taught about the major features of non-fiction text. Now give them a chance to deepen their thinking about how these features support understanding in a variety of formats and across reading levels and topics. You can use the finished sheets to lead a discussion of generalizations and observations the students can make about non-fiction text features to help them get the most out of their reading. This could also be the launch of a larger project where students or pairs pick one feature to “spot-light”.
