Packets include Common Core standard listed for each passage as well as Lexile levels for passages**
Close reading comprehension questions modeled after the Common Core standards!
All of the following excerpts, charts, passages and diagrams are associated with either a variety of multiple choice reading comprehension questions, open-response questions, student inquiry, both short and long answer questions or a combination of strategies.
Students will get acquainted with taking complex-question assessments. Use for; weekly assessments, pre-assessment, post-assessment, progress monitoring, and whatever else you have in mind!
Questions involve; close reading, using context clues, inference, poetry elements, plot, characterization, analytical reading, comprehension, reading for meaning, vocabulary and so much more!
February Packet Includes:
1- Nonfiction- Inside Your Brain
-Key Elements: Deciphering diagrams, close read, text features, author’s purpose, main idea, drawing diagrams
2- Nonfiction – The Olympic Games
-Key Elements: Deciphering meaning, close read, inference, text organization
3- Nonfiction – Excerpt from The Dolphins of Shark Bay
-Key Elements: Deciphering meaning, close read, fact/opinion, understanding arguments, explaining a theory
**Extension activity: Writing arguments to support a claim - Research Question “Why are dolphins so smart?”
-Key Elements: (RI.8.9, RI.8.8, W.8.1) Students are asked to find three sources on information pertaining to the research questions. Two in support and one opposing of their position on the research question. The guide line is provided for a brainstorm, rough, and final draft of the argument and supporting claims.

6- Biography of Langston Hughes
-Key Elements: Deciphering meaning, close read, cause and effect, understanding text, central idea

8- Fiction – Excerpt from Bud, Not Buddy

9- Nonfiction – The Harlem Renaissance
-Key Elements: Deciphering meaning, close read, theme, objective summary, central idea
10- Folktale – Excerpt from The People Could Fly
