Ever since I began using daily writing journals in my class, my students have become much better writers! I use these journals as quick writes. By giving them a time limit (usually about 10 minutes), they are forced to think quickly instead of thinking and debating what to write about.
Each journal has over 20 prompts, with monthly and seasonal topics as well as general topics. All three writing purposes -- narrative, informative, and persuasive -- are included. Following each prompt is a page and a half of lines for the kids to write. No more gluing little pieces of paper into journals or having the kids try to copy the prompt. The actually journal uses black and white clip art (at least most of them) for easy copying.
