PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

"Start Now!"

Begin the school year with small increments of this type of writing; at least once a month.

Great product to begin review or prep for State testing and in light of PARCC's recommendation to include 28+ writing pieces a year across all classes, here's an opportunity to write 9 different pieces within a month's time. What could be better!

This product is void of whistles, and bells, and gimmicks.

The fact is kids need to practice, generate and identify strong words, and phrases, effective organization of ideas in any writing. Often times these strong examples come from their own classmates. Give the kids an opportunity to reveiw the work of another student, perhaps someone from a previous year. Using model writing is the BEST way to improve a child's writing.

Once they have seen many examples of great writing, they should be given opportunities to perfect and try their hand at writing for different prompts.

All of that takes a certain amount of work, and though given any other circumstance, most would prefer to make writing enjoyable, which it can become, once students understand the difference between strong writing and weak writing.

Therefore, use the month of February to brush up on all those writing skills you have been teaching year long. Activities are described for whole class, individuals, groups and pairs of students. Practice is key, and it can not be overstated. Plus, anyone of these writing activities can be assigned for homework, or used throughout the year. Better yet, use during this month as a great way to build student writing stamina and to flush out weak expressions, and so on.

Last, the teacher can create art activities to go along with these activities. Whether the anchor charts students create are decorated or illustrated, or made into a story board, they will benefit from writing what they understand to be effect writing in and of itself from the variety of prompts given. Once these anchor charts have been created invite students to participate in a "gallery walk." Students should feel free to place post-it notes along side of these anchor charts with respectful remarks.

It takes a variety of approaches to bring students to a level of mastery; practice and more practice is key!

Follow the daily ideas or pick and choose what works best for you.

Enjoy!

PS. There is no need to stress out over grading. Instead, alternate scoring only an introduction for each piece that has been submitted, or only the 1st body paragraph, etc, or only the conclusion, etc.

An option to consider is:
The most valuable experience is for students to work for an entire piece in a simulated timed setting. After 9 different pieces have been written within a month's time, invite the student to select a single paper he/she wants fully scored.
In this way, students still write on a regular basis, you the teacher assesses select aspects of their writing, a final piece is fully scored holistically, and the task becomes manageable. But the best part is, students' writing will show improvement.

There are many, many ways to manage grading that at times can overwhelm language arts teachers; scoring a portion of a fully developed piece is one way to selectively assess papers.
