Eight no-prep activities provide hours of independent learning for third, fourth, and fifth grade students. This February Independent Learning Module includes a 14-page student booklet, answer keys, and an interactive website. Kids engage in meaningful learning experiences on their devices (computer, Chromebook, iPad, etc.) and respond in their packets. It’s a teacher’s dream come true!

What Is It?
Each Independent Learning Module (ILM) merges digital content with engaging activities. The specially designed website houses texts, presentations, and learning links. It was designed to keep high third grade students, average to high fourth grade students, and all fifth grade students working independently.
For increased Internet safety, all videos have been saved using Safeshare.tv, which eliminates ads.
How Can I Use It?
• Online Fun for All - The February ILM provides fun, meaningful instruction and practice for your entire class. Use it all or pick and choose for specific subjects.
• I’m Done, Now What? - Let the independent learning module provide anchor activities for early finishers or enrichment activities for gifted and talented learners.
• Five Minutes Peace (and More!) - Are you behind on grading? Do you need to meet with individual students or small groups? The independent learning module will keep your students busy for hours.
• Sub Plans - For a full day (or two) of sub plans, just leave the ILM! Kids will learn, work independently, and have fun.
This month’s ILM features heart-themed activities for eight subjects. Pick and choose or use them all!
Informational Text – Keeping Your Heart Healthy
• ILM Online - Students read “Keep Your Heart Healthy with Life’s Simple 7 for Kids” from the American Heart Association. They click on the seven steps to learn more.
• ILM Packet - Questions from each of the eight webpages require students to skim then read closely to answer questions about heart health.
Language – Coordinating Conjunctions
• ILM Online - Students watch a fun video showing how Justin Bieber used coordinating conjunctions in the song, “Baby.” A mini poster presents all seven coordinating conjunctions and examples of their use.
• ILM Packet - Students combine sets of sentences with coordinating conjunctions and commas.
Listening – The Heart
• ILM Online - Students watch a video and study a diagram of the heart.
• ILM Packet - They take notes then write lyrics to a children’s song to teach others about the function of the heart.
Literature – The Queen of Hearts: Media & Inference
• ILM Online - Students view color illustrations for “The Queen of Hearts” by Randolph Caldecott. (Links to more information about Caldecott and the Caldecott Medal are also provided.)
• ILM Packet - Four pages of Caldecott’s additional line drawings, formatted as comic strips, illustrate the story behind the poem. Students make inferences then add captions and speech bubbles.
Math – Candy Heart Fractions
• ILM Online - Students are presented with pictures of four different boxes of candy hearts to analyze. Videos, games, posters, and quizzes provide instruction/review of naming fractions of a group, simplifying, and finding averages.
• ILM Packet - The first page asks students to name fractions for each color of hearts in the four boxes and find averages. They must then analyze them to determine which colors occur most and least often. On the second page, they simplify all fractions from the first page.
Science – What Is a Heart Attack?
• ILM Online - Two videos explain what causes a heart attack and what to do. A comprehensive, child-friendly website tells more about heart disease, and students can explore with 2-D and 3-D interactives.
• ILM Packet - Students take notes then write a paragraph explaining what happens during a heart attack.
Social Studies – Economics & Candy Hearts
• ILM Online - A short video explains economics in simple terms. Another video explores the business end of the factory that makes candy hearts.
• ILM Packet - Students define economics and scarcity then name some scarce resources. They tell why people may choose to purchase candy hearts then think of some new sayings for this year’s product.
Writing – Writing a Shape Poem
• ILM Online - Two videos explain how to write a shape poem then two more provide examples.
• ILM Packet - Two smaller heart shapes allow students to generate ideas and draft; a full-page heart provides a template for their final drafts.
What Standards Are Covered?
• Informational Text - skimming multiple webpages and reading closely
• Language - using coordinating conjunctions in compound sentences
• Listening - taking notes
• Literature - analyzing how images enhance text; making inferences
