I designed this product for middle and high school students as a way to help create a greater awareness of good health, nutrition and fitness while improving language skills during American Heart Month in February!
There are six areas targeted in this product. Choose one or more sets of cards depending on the language goals you are addressing.
Object: Match up /answer various tasks on cards. For every four cards you collect or correct responses, earn a grocery bag. The first player to collect all six bags is the winner.
Pages 4-7: Vitamin-Rich Vocabulary-- 24 “Vitamin-Rich” vocabulary words (vitamin bottles) and 24 matching student-friendly definitions (red/yellow vitamin pills). Match the bottle with the red cap to the red vitamin pill, the yellow cap to the yellow pill. Key words/context clues are in BOLD letters to assist students in determining the correct answer.
Pages 8-11: Strength Training Synonyms—24 exercise related words(bathroom scales) to match up to 24 synonyms.
Page 12: Beating Heart Bonus—this set of 12 cards poses questions using the vocabulary found in the previous two activities. The student must apply their knowledge and understanding of the new words.
Pages 13-14: Write your own vitamin rich sentence using the new vocabulary.
Pages 15-18: Good-for-You Grammar—An information page defining run-on sentences, simple/compound sentence and sentence expansion. 36 sentence cards –12 for each area, are included.
Pages 19-20: Worksheets for writing out newly formed sentences.
Pages 21-23:Physically Fit Figurative Language—12 health-related idioms and 12 matching definitions. Beating Heart Bonuses (12 cards) are included which pose questions regarding practical application of idioms.
Pages 24-27: Potent Problem Solving: Eight real-life photos that include a scenario or situation. The student must read the problem and answer the questions –identify the problem, two possible solutions and draw a picture of what the solution would look like.
Pages 28-31: Cardio Boosting Comprehension—Eight health-themed passages are provided. Read the passage to the students and ask them to answer a variety of questions. Some are related to the details within the paragraph, others are inferential in nature. A page of WH questions that require higher level critical thinking skills are included.
Pages 32-33: Shopping Cart Game Mat/Grocery Bags: Earn at least four cards from a category and exchange it for the grocery bag for that category. Add your grocery bag to the cart / game mat. The first player to collect all six grocery bag categories is the winner! (Copy one shopping cart and one set of grocery bags per player)
