    Irony Mini-Unit -- This IRONY MINI-UNIT provides numerous opportunities for students to learn about the three types of irony, determine the purpose of irony, analyze irony, describe how irony contributes to a story and even write their own examples of irony. Each lesson starts with a fun and engaging activity. Then, students learn about and practice understanding irony through whole group instruction, small group work, partnerships, and independent practice.

    ”The Ransom of Red Chief” Short Story Study -- In this 8-day unit students will develop a deep understanding of O. Henry’s short story "The Ransom of Red Chief". Its tale of two hapless kidnappers who snatch the wrong boy is filled with humor and twists that students adore. Students develop skills in understanding short story elements, irony, theme, vocabulary, and writing in this unit.

    Daily Warm-Ups-- Start each class period with a warm-up that gives students choice while addressing a variety of ELA skills. Set 6. (Includes PDF and Google-Classroom compatible resources.)

    Point of View Learning Stations – 4 Days – 69 pages

    This Point of View Centers resource contains activities and lessons for 6 Point of View Learning Stations. Each center is designed to give students engaging and exciting learning experiences to practice, enrich, reteach, and enhance their learning. Working independently and with their small groups, student will have the opportunity to develop the critical reading comprehension skill of identifying and interpreting a writer’s point of view. Each center includes engaging point of view worksheets and handouts.

    These centers are extremely versatile. They can be taught during a single class period, spread out over consecutive days, or taught at different times throughout the year.

    Point of View Centers Overview:

    Center 1: Identifying Opinions, Bias and Tone

    Students work collaboratively to learn how an author’s opinions, bias, and tone can impact point of view.

    Center 2: Poetry Analysis

    Students read and analyze three poems and determine the point of view in each.

    Center 3: Point of View Writing

    Students roll point of view dice and write from the point of view of a school or community member on a specified topic.

    Center 4: Point of View in Texts

    Students investigate first-person, second-person, third-person-limited, and third-person-omniscient point of view by creating a foldable and reviewing 10 sample passages.

    Center 5: Point of View Clues

    Students work together to review clues written from the point of view of an object or animal.

    Center 6: Paired Passages

    Students read paired passages and investigate the different points of view in each passage.

    Irony Mini-Unit - 3 days – 53 pages

    This IRONY MINI-UNIT provides numerous opportunities for students to learn about the three types of irony, determine the purpose of irony, analyze irony, describe how irony contributes to a story and even write their own examples of irony. Each lesson starts with a fun and engaging activity – Irony Hunt (where students differentiate between examples of irony and just bad luck while rotating around the classroom), Types of Irony – Tri-Fold Cards (where students create interactive cards for the types of irony that they flip in response to ironic situations), and Irony Flip Cards (where students create interactive flip shapes, create irony, and then explain it). Then, students learn about and practice understanding irony through whole group instruction, small group work, partnerships, and independent practice.

    In this mini-unit, students will develop a deep understanding of literary devices, situational, dramatic, and verbal irony.
