Build comprehension on Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day with these 4 high-interest, nonfiction reading passages that feature one page of informational text and one page of multiple-choice comprehension questions. Topics include roses and their symbolism, the history of conversation hearts, George Washington's dentures, and Abraham Lincoln's famous wrestling match. The questions include a variety of reading skills and are modeled after the types of questions on standardized reading tests, but with only 3 answer choices. Fun for February reading!
The thumbnails and preview show the text and question format. The measured reading levels range from 3rd-5th and are "fairly easy to read" or "average" according to the readability indicators. I have 32 years of experience in preparing students for standardized reading testing and in studying these types of tests.
Here is what you get with this resource:
• Flower Power informational text and questions (2 pages)
• Heart Art informational text and questions (2 pages)
• Commander-in-Teeth informational text and questions (2 pages)
• White House Wrestler informational text and questions (2 pages)
• Answer Key (1 page)
• TOU & Credits (1 page)
Flower Power has a reading level in the 4th grade range. Heart Art, Commander-in-Teeth, and White House Wrestler are in the 5th grade range. I would recommend that 3rd grade teachers plan on doing these orally with students while modeling good reading strategies. Most 4th-6th graders who are already familiar with this type of testing format should be able to complete these independently.
As an added critical thinking BONUS, have students explain why they think the title of each reading passage was chosen.
I’d appreciate your purchase, your rating, and your feedback.
