Sight words are printed out to monthly themed cutouts.
Example: September words are printed on to apples, March words are printed on shamrocks, and so on.
The sight word of the day is placed outside the classroom door, at eye level for the students before entering the classroom.
When the students arrive in the morning they stand outside the classroom door, until the teacher is there to greet them. Each student orally states the sight and then spells it, the teacher gives each student a sticker after reading and spelling the sight word of the day, which they put on their monthly sight word sticker chart.
The student is then able to enter the classroom and complete their daily morning routine. After completing the morning activities, each student gets their monthly sight-word journal. The student will write the sight word of the day three times and then use it in a sentence. The students will then have the teacher/aide review their work. Student should read the sight word three times and their sentence to the teacher. Teacher will make necessary corrections and the student will revise their work. After a second review the student will have their journal starred and they may then independently read or continue with other morning activities.
The sight word of the day (the one outside the door) is then placed on the classroom's word wall.
