Product Description
Kindergarten or first grade thematic phonics games great geared towards developing automatic letter and word recognition. This card game is intended to be used as a supplemental phonics approach during the month of February and is titled "Snail Mail"; other fun games are available for every other month of the year! This game can be played with a flexible number of children making it. In my classroom, all children play the game, but they are separated into groups by level so some play it with letter sounds while others are reading long vowel words. This allows me to differentiate the instruction without having any children feeling left out. The kids LOVE it, and are always so excited to get the new games each month.

With this download, you will receive game pieces for children who are learning:
• letter names (p 1- 7)
• letter sounds (p 1-7)
• consonant vowel consonant words (p 8-13)
• consonant blends (p 14-19)
• long vowels (p 20-25)
• diphthongs (p 26-31)
• r-controlled vowels (p 32-37)

*You only need to print out the pages for the skills that your students are working on.

In addition, you will receive assessments for each of these phonics skills (p 37-43)

How to play:
• The teacher should hold the cards. I fan them out so the kids can pick from anywhere in the pile
• The children take turns picking cards. I provide them with assistance indentifying the letters/ reading the words when necessary
• If a child gets the “Extra Turn” card, they give that card back and pull two word cards
• If a child pulls the “Steal” card, they may take a card from a friend. Once they have stolen from a child, that child can no longer be stolen from
• I do not play with a winner, everyone is a winner as long as they tried his/ her best, and they get a sticker on their sticker chart!

Tips for assembly:
• Print out the cards then glue them to construction paper. I use different colors for the different levels
• After you have glued them, cut them out
• Once cut, laminate the cards
• If your school has a really good laminator, you could laminate then cut, but if like me, the lamination is not so strong, I recommend taking the extra step.
