This February literacy unit contains everything you need to teach an effective and engaging whole group literacy block for kindergarten or first grade! This unit follows the close reading model and includes phonemic awareness, reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, phonics, and crafts or extensions! Everything is provided for you - all you need to provide is the books!
Each week, you will focus on one of the texts. Each day you will read it in different ways, focusing on a different comprehension strategy. Students will also response through writing (instructions on how to scaffold this for K/1 are included).
The phonemic awareness, writing, and phonics activities are all differentiated for K/1 so you can easily use this to meet the needs of ALL your students! This month, kindergarten will be focusing on blends and CVCe words and first grade will focus on spelling patterns ee, ea, ey, ie, igh. You can easily take word work from either grade to differentiate instruction for all your learners if you prefer.
