Social studies is such a great place to hone the art of arguing and debate! One of the debates we have in class is between the Federalists and Anti-Federalists during our Constitution unit. I start this off by having the students learn about both sides in some student directed inquiry. Once they have a solid background, I offer them a couple of teacher created resources to use in order to complete this organizer.
Our debate format allows students to not only state their side of the argument but also question the opposing side as well. This organizer allows students to prepare for that by stepping them through the argument - counterargument flow.
Prior to this assignment, I have students create a fake Twitter page for a Federalist or an Anti-Federalist depending on which side they will debate. When they are filling out this organizer I have them include their Twitter name and whether they are a Federalist or and Anti-Federalist.
