Engage your students in exploring both the growing political divisions of America during the Federalist Age as well as the foreign policy crises that threatened the emerging new nation. Incorporating six cases (the French Revolution, the Neutrality Proclamation, Jay's Treaty, the XYZ Affair, the Quasi-War with France, and the Alien & Sedition Acts/Virginia & Kentucky Resolutions), students will use provided summative issue guides to address how the case threatened America and furthered division. Each case sheet/issue guide incorporates background on the issue, two excerpted primary sources (one from the Federalist perspective and the other representing the Democratic-Republican perspective), and the effects of the issue on the nation. Working in pairs with each partner adopting one of the two political perspectives, students will complete a data retrieval chart for the issues.
Product includes the six case sheets/issue guides, a lesson plan, data retrieval chart, and a short-answer exit ticket.
