Such a fun center activity!
I usually use this as a partner game. One child flips over a number card. The other child feeds the correct number of gold coins to the pirate. The first child then checks the amount to make sure it is correct. Then, the children switch roles. Meanwhile, I can be circulating the classroom to observe who has number recognition and counting down and who needs to continue to work on it.
For added fun, I use "gold coins" that I bought from my local dollar store or you can spray paint pebbles gold and use them as "gold nuggets"! (I have included gold coins for printing, so this is not necessary!)
