Feelings and Emotions: Activities, Oral Language, Centers, and Printables
Activities to spark discussion, questions and exploration about feelings and emotions for preschool and Kindergarten, and children with special needs. Teaching activities for small groups, for making centers, and for individual work.

• Set of large photo cards showing feelings and emotions (2 to a page) for small group. Choose one or more cards for a discussion. Show a card, ask questions e.g. What do you see? What is happening? How do think this person feels? Why do you think that? Have you felt this way before? etc These cards are not labeled, since several emotions for each photo may be interpreted. A space is left for you to label them if you wish. Some emotions and actions discussed may be: sad, crying, happy, smiling, surprised, excited, afraid, silly, scared, disappointed, shy, worried, nervous, sick, mad, startled, thinking, cold, tired, sleeping, interested, bored, loving, and many more.
• Set of smaller cards (6 to a page) using the same photos as above). Us e these for centers, individual work, Concentration and matching games (print 2 or more copies), and visual cues to express a feeling or emotion.
• Set of facial features to cut and paste. Offer the children large oval shapes that you have cut using various skin tones of construction paper. Point out and discuss the general positioning of features, have the children imitate common feelings (e.g. happy, sad, angry) with their own faces. There is no “right” way for the faces that they create to look. The goal is to motivate discussion and exploration. Other features can be drawn.
• Set of pre-drawn heads with no features. These can be used in various ways, depending on developmental level. There is a line at the bottom for the child’s written or dictated words about the picture. Add features with different media; cut out or not; make several into a booklet; use one head for everyone, as a directed extension to a lesson or discussion; bulletin board display; motivational cue, and more.
• Printable of a hand mirror. Ask a question– How do you feel today? Children discuss and draw “how they feel”. Words on the printable say “I feel _________”.
• Emergent reader in b/w titled” How Do They Feel?” There is face on each page depicting common emotions/feelings: happy, sad, angry, tired, surprised, scared, silly, excited, and a page for the children to draw how they are feeling.
• A set of 12 children (4 to a page) depicting various emotions. Cut out and use for stick puppets (small craft stick). Motivate group discussion, dramatic play, projecting own feeling on a puppet etc. Can also be used for a cutting and pasting creative activity – you could show the children how to make “word balloons” and help them write words coming from the cut-out’s mouth.
• Set of 32 cards (4 to a page) showing various “situations”. Pick and choose the cards to use, depending on your lesson. The cards show situations that the children will recognize, and remember happening to themselves, or other people. Use for discussion, story prompts, lesson introduction, extension etc. Several of the cards show situations concerning the concept of empathy and kindness, and its effect on self and others. These cards are useful for vocabulary extension, where the “new words” occur organically and naturally in the discussion.
• Set of 5 printables for the children to draw a picture of a person, or a situation. Each page has a sentence describing the picture. For example, “This makes me happy”. One page has the emotion left open, to be filled in.
