Whenever I met with a student to discuss a problem, whether a discipline issue, or something troubling the student, I would start the discussion by showing the student the small MOODZ poster. I’d ask, “How do you feel?” Or, if we were discussing a problem that happened earlier, I’d ask, “How were you feeling when that happened?” He or she would pause, look at the poster and eventually point to one of the faces even if they were unable to read the emotion word. This exercise was often an eye-opener. An angry student would point to “Overwhelmed.” Another student might
point to “embarrassed.” It was so much more effective to know what the youth was specifically feeling than to try to guess at what was behind their anger and emotional upset.
The MOODZ Poster is a fantastic resource for every classroom. This poster is particularly helpful when building rapport, mediating conflict, working out discipline,
or for any other feelings related activity.
