First Quadrant Only (Grid 40 x 30 Landscape)
Uses fractional points with 1/2 [ex.: (4 1/2, 6) ]
This coordinate graphing project is fun for the student, makes a great bulletin board display and is ideal for reviewing coordinate graphing skills.
Students will use their knowledge of coordinate graphing and ordered pairs to create a drawing of a birthday cake with the words “Feliz Cumpleaños”. This will be created by plotting ordered pairs and then connecting them with straight lines. Even though directions are included for all quadrants, this project is in the first quadrant only.
This activity can be a class project or something to be worked on independently when time allows. It also works as an extra credit assignment or when there is a substitute teacher.
The graph consists of points in the first quadrant using ordered pairs with several points using the fraction 1/2. When finished, they can use markers, colored pencils or other medium to enhance the project.

If you like this project, please let us know. There are many projects covering the entire school year and some projects are cross curricular (Sports, Patriotism, Seasons, Holidays, History, and Science). Lessons begin at 2nd grade and are appropriate for the Elementary School, Middle School and some for High School students. These projects have been used successfully at both the Elementary and Middle School levels.
All projects are copyrighted, so please don’t distribute them to all of your colleagues. Instead direct them to my Store,

Specify locations and describe spatial relationships using coordinate geometry and other representational systems.
Common Core State Standards
CCSS.Math.Content.5.G.A.1 Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).
CCSS.Math.Content.5.G.A.2 Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation.
5.8C: Graph in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane ordered pairs of numbers arising from mathematical and real-world problems, including those generated by number patterns or found in an input-output table.
6.8 b) identify the coordinates of a point and graph ordered pairs in a coordinate plane.
