Have your students make comparisons between August Wilson's play, Fences, and Denzel Washington's 2016 movie. This four-page packet asks students to compare depictions of characters and settings, and note changes from the play. At the end, students read an excerpt of the move's review from The New Yorker and state whether they agree or disagree with the review.
The packet is designed to keep students focused and engaged while watching the film in class. You can, however, decide to use only certain sections of the packet depending on your needs. This is a great active viewing guide to help students make deeper connections while watching the movie.
