Fermi questions are a great way to get your students engaging with mathematical reasoning, problem solving, estimation and multiplication in an active way. They ask near-impossible to work out questions such as
- How long would it take to count to one million?
- How many hairs on your head?
This pack contains 12 Fermi Question Task Cards and 12 Fermi Question worksheets to suit whatever teaching method works best for your students.
Fermi questions are name after the physicist Enrico Fermi. He challenged his students to use estimation, common sense and numerical reasoning to work out quantities that were difficult or impossible to measure. He deliberately posed questions with limited information so that students had to ask more questions. His questions emphasise the process rather than the answer. (TeacherToolkit.co.uk)
