I love this novel, and using this fun and effective summarizing strategy with my students. In chapter 22, Matilda tells Eliza everything that she has endured since they last saw one another. What a great place for students to stop and summarize, especially with this activity which encourages silence in the classroom, as well as teamwork. Small groups of students pass this worksheet back and forth according to your time cues, each adding an event in the chronological summary of Matilda's story. When the pre-designated time is up, students work as a team to add transition language and to "smooth out" their writing into cohesive, efficient summaries. Plus, when presented as an opportunity to pass notes in class, students tend to be extra silent. Please check out my other Fever1793 products. Happy teaching!
