This 100-page unit will help you teach your students strategies for reading and understanding different types of literature (fairy tales, folk tales, fables, mysteries, historical fiction, and poetry). The lessons teach comprehension, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and discussion strategies.

The lessons and materials included in this unit will help your students become engaged readers who use strategies flexibly, record their thinking on sticky notes and in reading journals, and share their reading and thinking with other students.

During this unit, your students will learn to:
- Comprehend, take notes on, and talk productively about different types of fiction
- Monitor their comprehension and use fix-up strategies when necessary
- Read aloud text fluently and expressively
- Summarize and retell stories
- Actively read mysteries (look for clues and try to solve the mystery before the characters do)
- Talk and write about the effectiveness of an author's craft
- Discuss the moral / lesson of a story
- Compare and contrast similar stories, including fairytales from different cultures
- Read and interpret poems
- Describe how words and phrases in a poem contribute to its meaning (alliteration, repetition, rhyming words, etc.)

Here’s what the unit includes:
- 32 detailed minilessons
- 5 different sections: general fiction reading strategies, strategies for reading mysteries, strategies for reading traditional literature, strategies for reading historical fiction, and strategies for reading poetry
- Unit goals and Common Core alignment for each lesson
- Posters to support unit concepts
- Printable materials, including reading strategy cards and graphic organizers, to accompany the minilessons
- Writing prompts for students to glue into reading journals
- 11 pages of tips and real photographs to help you implement reading workshop in your classroom, learn how to confer with students, and organize your materials.
