This unit is an easy and fun way to introduce and study fiction and non-fiction texts, and it's all about monkeys! The activities in this set are aligned to the common core standards as well as the key learning areas.

* Monkey Facts. {list of facts about monkeys with a diagram or missing letters from the words found in the text.}.

* Non-fiction text about monkeys. {reading skills and highlighting important facts.}

* Monkey Trouble. {activity on identifying words with the letters 'on'}

* Cut n Paste. {activity on sentence structure and word order.}

* Making Sense. {questions to respond to after reading the text.}

* Sample Information Report about snakes. {teachers can model and teach a simple structure of an information report.}

* Information Report Writing - Monkeys. {students fill in details about monkeys.}

* Word Story Vocabulary Cards. {cards which can be cut out and used in class before reading the fictional pirate monkey story.}

* Pirate Chuckles and His Magic Sword. {An original fictional story to be used as a guided reading or printed as a little booklet for children to read. - A powerpoint show will be released for free to accompany this file so please make sure you download it if you use smartboard or digital technology in your class.}

* Continue the story. {this activity will help children use their imagination to continue the storyline half way into the reading.}

* Characters. {who are the characters, write about them.}

* Vocabulary matching.

* Comprehension Questions. {to follow the story.}

* Sequencing activity. {put the order of events in correctly and re-write the story.}

* Structure. {write about the characters, setting, problem and ending.}

* Recount. {re-write the story in their own words.}
