I used this as a culminating activity after a unit on fiction/non-fiction. I had students work in small groups (partners seemed best) and sort a bag of books (about 6) into fiction vs. non-fiction. I chose books that had a variety of components. Fiction-pictures, characters/story plot, clear beginning, middle, end. etc. Non-fiction- Table of contents, photographs, glossary, factual, etc.
Groups marked off parts of each genre with sticky notes and discussed their thinking with each other. They then completed the recording sheet with one fiction and one non-fiction text.
