Product Description
This resource is inspired by the "Humans of New York" blog. Do you and your students love looking through the hit blog “Humans of New York” Humans of New York (www.humansofnewyork.com) as much as I do? I think I’m as addicted to it as much as TpT! Now I have found a way to incorporate “Humans of New York” into lessons to select quotes and analyze significant passages from any novel, play or short story. This product offers an opportunity for students to do a close reading yet it is an assignment that is “outside the box”. It is a fun way to get kids moving, taking pictures and thinking analytically. It is hands-on, requiring students to analyze literature and justify their choices. Students will gain a deeper understanding of texts and characters, character connections, author purpose and how characters can help move a story forward. It is suitable for IB and also for ELL students to get them using language, asking questions and writing about stories. If you prefer not to send students into the community for this assignment, it can easily be adapted to the school or even just within the classroom. Students will love making connections between literature and Brandon Stanton's blog, which is also a #1 New York Times bestselling novel.

This resource includes:
• A PowerPoint about Humans of New York.
• Examples from a novel, play and graphic novel to model to students of:
o Humans of New York, “The Catcher in the Rye” edition,
o Humans of Denmark, “Hamlet” edition, and
o Humans of Iran, “Persepolis” edition.
• Clear and detailed instructions for the assignment.
• Ideas to get students taking pictures and writing, integrating quotes from any novel, short story or play.
• Rubrics for the presentation and submitted work.
• Student photography tips.
• Interview and note-taking tips.
• Sample explanations to model to students justifying/explaining choices.
• A sample written reflection.
• Differentiated plans with a list of suggested questions for interviews.
• Extension opportunities to get students to produce photos and quotes from characters for other novels, plays and short stories, among other ideas.
• Opportunities for self and peer evaluation.
• Quotes from people I photographed to model to students.
In the spirit of Humans of New York, if you purchase this item, 50 percent of all proceeds will fund photography workshops for selected students.
