In this activity students practice identifying fiction and non-fiction. Students choose book cards and read the sentences. Students then sort the cards based on the sentences onto the fiction mat or the non-fiction mat. Print on card stock and laminate this activity for durability. You can make this activity self checking by writing the answer on the back of the book cards. Great reading practice. Students can complete activity with a partner, group, or individually. Activity can be used whole group as well having students read their sentence card aloud and then the class discussing why that particular example would be fiction or non-fiction. Lots of great ways to use this activity. This file also contains 2 additional practice pages: one is cut and paste where students cut out books and paste them on the correct bookshelf based on the title of the books and the other is a graphic organizer type of paper where the student has to select 1 fiction book (write the title) and explain why it is fiction and 1 non fiction (write the title) book and support why they think that book is nonfiction.
