"Fiddler of the Roof" takes place in the Pale of Settlement in Imperial Russia in 1905. The film beautifully depicts a Jewish family's faith, village life and traditions while exposing the reality of the discrimination and violence they faced on Russian soil.
This curriculum can be completed by students independently after watching the film or used as a teaching guide in the classroom. With this guide, students will learn about the Pale of Settlement and lives of Jews in Russia at the turn of the 20th century. A vocabulary activity and lyrics for two of the film's major songs are included.
