Field Day is a fun and exciting day for students, but many schools do not offer a full day of field day activities. It can be hard to engage students when they are in Field Day mode, so why not engage them by keeping them in Field Day mode, yet bringing in a math focus? Students are likely to engage in activities at school when they feel that they are a part of what they are learning. Field Day is a great time to practice math word problems and it’s an even better time to have students create their own word problems.
This resource gives students a template for creating a word problem. It walks students through the process of creating a word problem, solving their problem, checking in with a teacher, and sharing their problem with another classmate. I’ve included everything you need to make this a success, including a chart with key words for math word problems, which will come in useful for any students who might feel a little stuck. I’ve also included an example to share with your students as you are introducing the assignment.
