This is a project that can be done in groups or individually that challenges students to research how chemistry is currently part of the world around them. Students research jobs that use chemistry and what research is currently being performed in these fields. I have used this as both a required project that is part of my course as well as an extra credit assignment that can be done by students on their own time.
This project is great because students get involved in answering the reoccurring "why do I have to learn this?" question. They see that what they are learning in class everyday is useful in many different fields and what research is currently being done in those fields. This usually includes technology such as batteries and medicine which tends to be very interesting to students.
