This unit was based on story elements and was chosen by my cooperating teacher. He felt that this unit would be helpful for the upcoming PSSA testing that will take place for the fifth graders. I didn’t use any textbooks for this unit, but instead tried to create my own lessons using adapted materials that I found on the internet. My cooperating teacher and several other teachers for fifth grade discussed which elements of a story that they felt would be appropriate for my unit. We decided on several topics that needed to be taught since these types of questions are asked on the PSSA. We choose character traits and setting, main ideas and summary, sequence of events, conflict and resolution, point of view, mood, theme, and author’s purpose. Each one of my lessons in the unit focused on one of these elements.
