I love incorporating art history in my art lessons. After my trip to Europe I was inspired to create a European based lesson in all of my elementary classes.
For fifth grade I decided to focus on Siena, Italy, and the various neighborhoods. We looked at celebrations, traditions, and history of the city. For the project the students create their own neighborhood and develop a motto, insignia, and statue for their neighborhood.
This lesson can last one class period or up to 3 depending on how you arrange it. This lesson plans includes essential questions, objectives, goals, national art standards, and a checklist for evaluation.
