I love incorporating art history in my art lessons. After my trip to Europe I was inspired to create a European based lesson in all of my elementary classes.
For fifth grade I decided to focus on Siena, Italy, and the various neighborhoods. We looked at celebrations, traditions, and history of the city. For the project the students create their own neighborhood and develop a motto, insignia, and statue for their neighborhood.
This PowerPoint includes information on Italian regions, Siena, insignias, the Palio race, and the lesson basics. Due to copyright laws not all images are included in this powerpoint. However, I have included easy to look up links for you to use to add the pictures. This PowerPoint is set up to be divided into an introduction to the lesson and 2 lesson reviews.
This lesson can last one class period or up to 3 depending on how arrange it. This lesson plans includes essential questions, objectives, goals, national art standards, and a checklist for evaluation.
