Teaching math vocabulary is one of the most critical elements of teaching math- and, yet, it is one of the most overlooked! Mathematical vocabulary is not something that comes naturally to our students. Specific, targeted instruction with these academic words is necessary to help students truly understand the vocabulary. Multiple opportunities for practice allows students to deepen their knowledge and create permanence.
This 220 page math vocabulary product is designed to be a one stop shop for your fifth grade math vocabulary needs! A teacher's guide explains each section, and clear instructions (with visuals) are shown for the activities. Answer keys are included for the worksheets.
The vocabulary words are broken down by domain. Within each domain, the words are listed alphabetically. When it is applicable, they are then sorted again by sub domain. For instance, in geometry, you will first see an alphabetical list of all the geometry words. Then, you will see two smaller subdomain lists of “graphing” and “shapes.” The ability to choose which list to use will help you to tailor this product to your classroom needs. I recommend using the specific subdomain lists when you are teaching those specific skills, but using the larger lists for more comprehensive review and reference. The larger domain lists are also excellent for unit review and state testing review.
The mixed review section has been chosen based upon math vocabulary words that frequently appear on high stakes standardized testing and words that are critical to understanding the major core concepts of the fifth grade. Mastery of these words has been shown to improve student mathematical achievement and outcomes.
Multiple options for practice are also provided. You will notice there are multiple options for each crossword puzzle- that isn’t a mistake! You can choose to use a puzzle with a word bank or without, depending on the needs of your students. Make sure to look through the table of contents and browse the options before you print to save on ink.
